According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu as the operator of the universe, regulates his four duties residing in four places. Rules from Dwarika worship in Rameshwram, worldly pleasures in Puri and rest in Badrinath. These places are called Dham.
 
An important source of cultural continuity of India is Mahakumbh festival. In a cycle of 12 years, Mahakumbh is celebrated in four different places namely Haridwar, Prayag (Allahabad), Ujjain and Nasik.

Jyotirling is belived to be the permanent abode of Lord Shiva. According to Shivpuranas there are 12 Jyotirlings- Somnath, Mallikarjun, Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar and Amleshwar, Kedarnath, Bhimashankar, Vishwanath, Trimbakeshwar, Baidyanath, Rameshwaram and Ghrishneshwar.
 
Apart from Jyotirlings some other popular tirths has also been dedicated to Lord Shiva, like AmaranthKailashnath, BrihdeshwarMahabaleshwar, Bhuvneshwar, Kandriya Mahadev (Khajuraho), Ekling jee, Ranveereshwar etc.
 
Worship of lord Vishnu and his other icons is extremely popular in different parts, such as Shri Rangam, Tirupati, Gaya, Thiruanantpuram, Chitrakoot and Nathdwara.
 
Goddesses are equally popular as Gods in India. We have mentioned detail information regarding Meenakshi (Madurai), Vaishnodevi, Kanyakumari, Maihar and Vindhyachal.
 
Among the tirths dedicated to lord Ganesh, Ashtavinyaks of Maharashtra are more popular. These are Ballaleshwar, MoreshwarSiddhivinayak, Chintamani, Girijamaj, Mahaganpati, Varadvinayak and Vighneshwar.
 
Tirths (Pilgrimages) related to Navagrahas has been scattered all over India. Out of which Konark, Thingloor, Ujjain, Thiruvenkadu, Alankudi, Kanjanur, Singhnapur, Uppali and Keezperupallam are extremely popular.
