Introduction:

Shirdi is a small, holy town in the Rahta taluka of Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra.

This place is considered as renowned saint Saibaba’s Sadhna-bhoomi and Karm-kshetra (the land of Baba’s austerity and activity), where he spent 60 years of his life.

According to researchers, Saibaba’s real name was Haribhau Mulari. His birth place was Pathari village from where he came to Shirdi during his childhood.

Saibaba considered Vekula of Shelu as his spiritual guru.

Saibaba had immense faith in Ekeshwarvaad (One God) theory which was based on Adwaitwaadi (non-dualist) philosophy. He used to say ‘Sab ka Maalik Ek’ which means ‘There is one master (God) for all’. He heard Kabir’s couplets also with great devotion.

He died on 15th October 1918.

According to local beliefs, Saibaba participated in the first independence struggle of 1857 with Rani Laxmibai and Tatya Tope.

In 1916 A.D. Govindrao Raghunath Dabholkar wrote a book called Shri Sai Santcharit on the religious beliefs of Saibaba.

Main Places To See

Samadhi Mandir:

This is the centre of all spiritual activities in Shirdi. Here, four aartis of Baba are performed everyday. On Thursdays, a procession of Baba’s charan-paduka (wooden sandals) is carried out which ends at Dwarka Mai. The temple houses an idol of Baba seated on a silver throne.

Dwarka Mai:

It is said that Baba spent most of his time in this old mosque. A wood fire (Dhooni) in the name of Baba is constantly lit whose ash (Vibhuti) is taken by devotees. The ash is believed to have magical, curative powers against diseases.

Guru Sthan:

Close to the Samadhi Mandir is the sacred Neem tree under which Baba used to meditate. A small temple called Guru Sthan has been built here. The temple has a Shivling and a photograph of Baba. It is more crowded on Thursdays.

Shri Saibaba Sthan:

Here all the information, books, and photographs on Baba’s life and teachings are available. The simplicity and cleanliness of the place is something that invites visitors’ attraction.

Baba spent a good part of his time in this garden which has the Shiwadi well, used by Baba. Here, a lamp is constantly kept lit under a Peepal tree.
