The holy pilgrimage of Vindhyachal is situated in eastern Uttar Pradesh, in the Mirzapur district, at 8 km from the district headquarters. The presiding deity is Vindhyavasini Devi.
    
There are 3 temples representing the 3 forms of Aadi Shakti - Vindhyavasini (Kaushiki Devi), Mahakali and Ashtabhuja. The visit to these 3 temples is known as Trikon Yatra.
    
This region also showcases colourful tribal culture. Primitive tribes like Khairwa, Baiga, Kol, and Gond inhabit in this region.
    
Vindhyavasini Devi is called Kajri Devi by the locals. It is believed that the Kajri form of singing originated from here. Folk dance forms like Karma, Jhumar, and Kolthani are also popular here.
   
The entire region is known for its dhurries and bronze articles in India.
   
Vindhyachal Shaktipeeth is considered as one amongst the 108 Shaktipeeths mentioned in Devi Bhagwat Puran.

Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs: 
   
According to Vindhyachal Mahatmya, this is the original site of Aadi Shakti and she is the one who, in the form of Yog Maya, keeps Lord Vishnu under control and in other forms, destroys the evil and does welfare for her devotees.
    
 According to another reference from Devi Bhagwat, pleased with Manu’s meditation, Bhagwati appeared from Ksheersagar, blessed him, and made Vindhyachal her permanent abode.
    
According to a story from Durga Saptashati, when the Gods were distressed and terrorised by 2 demons called Shumbh and Nishumbh, a divine Shakti (power) emerged from Goddess Parvati’s body that killed the demons.
   
Since the Shakti rose from the body cells (Koshika) of Parvati, she came to be known as Kaushiki Devi.
    
According to ancient and holy scriptures like Mahabharat and Harivansh Puran, this Devi appeared as the daughter of Bhagwati Yashoda in Dwapar-yug. The same night, out of fear of Kans, Vasudev handed over Lord Krishna to Yashoda and brought back this Devi in a girl form, back to the prison as Devki’s child.
    
As soon as Kans tried to kill her thinking her to be the eighth child of Devki, she not only flew in the sky but took the form of Ashtabhuja (8-armed) and predicted that the slayer of Kans has already taken birth. This Ashtabhuja Devi came to Vindhyachal and settled here forever.
 

Historical Facts

History: 
   
This region has been a prime inhabitation of humans since the Stone Age. Evidences of civilisations from the mid Stone to the Copper Age have been found here.
   
During the Maurya period, the region was a key centre for financial activities. A pillar inscription from Ashok’s period, found in Narghat states the different rates of toll tax prevalent then.
   
In the first century B.C., the region was under the control of the valiant Vikramaditya. The Bhartrahari Temple is believed to have been built by him.
   
The 12th century composition, Alha Khand (author Jagnik) also has a reference to this region.
   
The first historical description of the place is by the famous traveller, Tieffenthaler.

Vindhyavasini Devi Temple:
 
This is a temple situated in a huge complex in the middle of the Vindhyachal Bazar. The temple houses a black stone idol of Bhagwati mounted on a lion. Besides, there are shrines of Ashtabhuja Devi, Dharmdhwaja Devi, Mahakali, and many Shivlings installed in the temple. The Saptashati Mandap has the entire Durga Saptashati inscribed.
    
Kali Khoh:
 
This site of Mahakali is 2 km from the Vindhyavasini Devi Temple in a small cave.
    
Ashtabhuja Devi Temple:
 
Ashtabhuja Devi is believed to be the daughter of Yashoda. It is situated on a hill at 3 km from Vindhyavasini Temple.
   
Tara Devi Temple:
 
This is situated in a crematorium. The presiding deity, Tara, is considered as the Goddess of peace and security.
   
Rameshwar Mahadev Temple:
 
It is situated on the Ram-Gaya Ghat. It is believed that the Shivling over here was installed by Lord Ram himself.

Mirzapur:
 
It is the district headquarters where the famous Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple is situated. Tourists make sure to also visit the monsoon water falls like Tanda and Vindham. Mirja is also one of the names of Aadi Shakti.
   
Chunar:
 
This place is about 30 km from here and famous for its historically renowned fort. It is believed that when Lord Vaman asked King Bali for land measuring 3 footsteps, the first step was placed in Chunar, which is why it is also called as Chunadri. The story of Chandrakanta, a prose composition, is also based in Chunar.

A fair is held in Mirzapur at a place called Lohandi Mahavir.
