Introduction:

Budh (Mercury) planet is considered as the child of Chandrama (Moon) and Tara. He was married to Ida, the daughter of Manu, and Pururava is said to be his child

The ancient temple of Budh is situated between Kaveri and Manikarnika Rivers, in Thiruvenkadu, 20 km from Mayiladuthurai in the state of Tamil Nadu. Besides, there is also the Shwet Raneshwar Temple of Lord Shiv situated here.

Thiruvenkadu literally means white. It is believed that the place has been named after Lord Indra’s elephant, Airawat, who meditated here.

The place has been considered as sacred since ancient times and has been referred to in Shilappadikaram, the Sangam era poetry as well as in Valmiki Ramayan. Nayanar devotees have also sung songs of praise about this place.

The present day temples were built in the Chola period. Inscriptions from the Aditya Rajraja and Vikram Chola periods have been found here.

Besides the Shwet Raneshwar and Budh, other deities like Brahm-vidya Devi, Durga, Kali, Aghor Murti, Nataraj etc. are also worshipped in the main temples. There are 3 temples - Vriksha Badawal, Kondarai, and Bel.

Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs:

According to mythological beliefs, when a curse rendered Budh an impotent, he came here and worshipped Shiv who not only relieved him of the curse but also gave him the control of Budhlok.

According to another belief, when a demon injured Shiv’s carrier, Nandi, he appeared in his fierce form of Aghor Murti and killed the demon.

It is believed that Shwetketu, a sage from the Upnishadic era, and Indra’s elephant, Airawat, also worshipped Lord Shiv at this place.

The Ling Puran suggests Budh as the son of Chandrama (Moon) and Rohini while the Vishnu Puran, the Brahm Puran and the Padma Puran refer to him as the son of Chandrama and Brihaspati’s (Jupiter) wife, Tara.

According to local beliefs, devotees perform a parikrama of the Budh Temple 17 times with a lamp being lit every time. This ritual is said to eliminate all the negatives induced by the Budh planet and also adds to the wisdom and prosperity of the individual.

Astrological Beliefs

Astrological Beliefs:

The ancient sources refer to Budh as the ambassador of the Gods. He is considered as intelligent and an expert in conversing, which is why those affected by him are scholars, teachers, artists and high end businessmen.

Budh planet is said to have 2 forms. This is responsible for a dual personality in a single person.

The nature of Budh planet is supposed to be that of Tridoshatmak or triple disorders (Kaph, Pitta, and Vaat) and he is considered the Lord of the North direction.

In Indian astrology, Budh has the form of a quadrilateral and mounts a lion. Green is his natural colour and water is his element.

From the astrological point of view, Budh is considered as the Lord of Mithun (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo) zodiac signs, a friend of Sun and Venus, and an enemy of Chandra. Generally, the effect of Budh depends on which planet he shares the house with.

The metal associated with Budh is brass, colour is green, gem is emerald, and number is 5. He is considered as the Lord of 3 Nakshatras viz., Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, and Revati.
