Introduction:

Among the Navgrahas, Chandra (Moon )  is placed at second after Surya (Sun). He is known by many other names like, Chandrama, Som, Shashi, Indu, Thingal, Rajnipati etc.

The temple of Chandra (Thingal This is alsos editatable ) is situated in Thingalur near Tanjore in Tamil Nadu. The word Thingalur is made up of Thingal (Moon) and Ur (village). This temple is believed to be from the Pallav era.

This place is 13 km to the north of Tanjore and 43 km to the south-west of Kumbhkonam. Thiruvayur is situated at 3 km to the south from here.

The Thingal Temple houses a small, white idol of Lord Chandra in a standing posture. Close to the Thingal Temple are the Kailashnath Temple of Lord Shiv and a Chandra Teerth (pond). On Magh Poornima (February-March) and Falgun Poornima (March-April), the moonlight falls on Lord Shiv.

The form of Chandra is that with 2 arms that hold a lotus. He is shown mounted on a chariot with 10 horses. He is considered as the planet of love and fertility.

Thingalur is also associated with renowned saints like Thirunavukkarasar and Appudiyadigal. On every Monday and the Poornima day, the devotees perform a special puja.

Chandra is considered as an important God in the ancient Indian religious texts. The ninth mandal of Rigved is dedicated to Som.

The Puranas consider Chandra as the son of Maharshi Atri and Sati Anusuya. The Puranas also believe Chandra to be among the 14 jewels that emerged from the churning of the sea.

Chandra is also considered as the father of Budh (Mercury) planet. According to ancient scripts, Chandra had married the 27 daughters (Rohini, Anuradha, Bharani, Sharmishtha etc) of Prajapati Daksh.

Tamil beliefs suggest that Chandra had worshipped Shiv in Thingalur after being cursed by Daksh and had regained his brightness.

The other Puranas consider Chandra as the left eye of Lord Vishnu. Chandra is also worn by Lord Shiv on his head which is why Shiv is also known as Chandrashekhar (Chandra-moon, shikhar-head).

Devotees praying in the temple of Thingalur are not only relieved of the negative effects of Chandra but their sicknesses are also destroyed.

According to local beliefs, no person has ever died due to a snake bite in Thingalur.
