The devotees are supposed to perform 24 circumambulations of the Guru Temple with a lamp being lit after each one. He is worshipped with a yellow or golden cloth and jasmine flowers.

This holy place is considered as the 98th Thevaram Sthal of the Chola region. Lord Shiv is in the Neelkanth (blue throated) posture. Aadi Shankaracharya also came here and worshipped Shiv.

According to local beliefs, a king had 7 sons and daughter-in-laws. They would insult Brahmins at which Brihaspati was enraged and therefore seized their wealth and prosperity. Later, they regained their glory only after the youngest daughter-in-law worshipped Brihaspati and kept fasts in his name.

Vishwamitra too worshipped Lord Shiv in Alankudi to attain the status of Brahmarishi.

This place has been referred to as Sarupedimangalam in an inscription of Vikram Chol (1131 A.D.). It is believed that here Parvati married Lord Shiv in one of her incarnations.
