Introduction:

In the Indian astrological system, Ketu is considered as a shadow planet whose good and evil effects influence not only an individual’s life but also the entire creation.

A renowned temple of Ketu is situated in Keezhperumpallam Village of Tamil Nadu. It is 25 km to the east of Mayiladuthurai. The local village here is Dharmakulam.

Keezhperumpallam is known for the Nageshwar Temple of Lord Shiv where his Devi is Sundara Nayaki. This temple is from the Chola era and its complex houses the Ketu Temple.

A west-facing, 5-hooded idol of Ketu is installed in the temple. Those affected with the negatives of Ketu donate a silver serpent. The temple pond is called Nag-teerth.

The Tamil word Keezhperumpallam means a deep valley. It perhaps suggests the highest order of decline of Ketu’s body when Lord Vishnu had cut it into pieces.

Pipal and Neem are worshipped as the temple trees.

Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs:

According to a tale mentioned in various Puranas, when a disguised Rahu drank the nectar that emerged from the churning of the ocean, Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini cut his body in 2 parts. The nectar consumption made the head portion immortal and came to be known as Rahu while the lower body part was known as Ketu.

The Puranas mention Ketu as one with an ugly face with a mace in one hand and the other in a blessing posture. An eagle is considered as his carrier.

According to the temple folklore, Ketu worshipped Lord Shiv at this place and Lord Shiv, pleased with his penance, granted him the status of a planet.

According to Matsya Puran, Ketu has many forms of which the most prominent one is that of a Dhumketu (comet) which has an effect on the entire creation.

Various sources refer to Ketu by different names like Rahupoonchh, Shikhi, Dhwaj etc. The mythological sources consider him as a part of Daanav (demon) Jaati and Jaimini Gotra.

The locals believe that all kinds of negative effects of Ketu can be eliminated by a serpent donation to the temple, a worship of Lord Nageshwar, and a bath in Nag teerth.

Astrological Beliefs

Astrological Beliefs:

The nature of Ketu has qualities of Tam and his appearance is dark. Except the body parts, Ketu possesses the same virtues as that of Mangal.

Ketu is considered as the Lord of Mithun (Gemini). It displays a high effect in Dhanu (Sagittarius) and low in Vrish (Taurus).

Budh (Mercury), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), and Rahu are considered as friendly planets while it has animosity with Chandra (Moon), Surya (Sun) and Mangal (Mars).

Ketu literally means a flag. In this form the planet is symbolic of an individual’s rise and fall. Its highest effect is between the age of 48 and 52 years.

The ill effects (Mahadasha) of Ketu last for 7 years. His presence in an inauspicious position in the birth chart gives rise to a number of sicknesses in the individual. Cat’s eye is considered as his gem stone.
