The planet Mangal (Mars ) is known by many other names like Angarak, Bhaum, Marsh, Kuja, Chebai, Lalgriha (red planet). He is also known as the God of sacredness and war.

His complexion is believed to be red, with a quadrilateral form that is adorned with a Trishul (trident), Gada (mace), Kamal (lotus), and Shool (spear).

He represents Tuesday and resides in Mangal-lok which is considered superior to Shukralok (abode of Venus). A ram is considered as his vehicle.

The ancient temple of Mangaldev is situated in Ujjain. It is believed that Mangal planet was born here. Ujjain also happens to be the site of Mahakaleshwar, a form of Lord Shiv.

Another temple of Mangal is situated near Trimbar in Tamil Nadu. This temple belongs to the Chola period.

Thousands of people impacted with the ill effects of Mangal visit Ujjain to get relieved of the negative effects. The Mangalnath Temple is particularly crowded on Angarak Chaturthi.

Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs:

The Puranas refer to Mangaldev as the child of Lord Shiv and Prithvi (Bhumi, earth), thereby acquiring the name, Bhaum.

The Matsya Puran states that Mangal planet was born in Ujjain, the land of Mahakaal. The mud over here is red even to this day.

According to a tale from the Skand Puran, during the battle with Andhakasur, droplets of sweat that fell on earth off the body of Lord Shiv gave birth to Mangal. It was Mangal who absorbed the blood of Andhakasur within himself, thus facilitating his killing.

According to another belief, when Lord Shiv was engrossed in deep meditation on Kailash Mountains, 3 droplets of sweat fell off his forehead giving birth to Mangal who was raised by Bhumi (Earth).

In order to please Shiv, Mangaldev had performed meditation in Kashi. The blessings of Shiv made him the Lord of Mangal-lok.

Astrological Beliefs

Astrological Beliefs:

In Indian astrology, Mangal is believed to be blood red in complexion, agile, a temperament of bile, pure and generous natured planet.

He is the Lord of Mesh (Aries) and Vrish (Scorpio) star signs. He is considered as high in Makar (Capricorn) and low in Kark (Cancer). He rules over the southern direction.

He is friendly with Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon) and Brihaspati (Jupiter), hostile towards Budh (Mercury) and neutral to Shukra (Venus) and Shani (Saturn). He is also the Lord of 3 nakshatras viz. Mrigshirsha, Chitra, and Dhanishtha.

His presence in the third, sixth, tenth and eleventh house from lagna in an individual’s birth chart is considered to give favourable results, while the presence in the first, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth, ninth and twelfth house is said to yield unfavourable results.

His influence generates virtues of courage, heroism, anger, warring tendency, joyousness, knowledge of sense, and dominance in an individual. Such people are soldiers, doctors, sportsmen, mechanics etc.

An unfavourable Mangal results in blood related ailments, accidents, throat and eye diseases, attacks, Beri-Beri etc. In the family, it is fatal for the husband or wife. It is also the kaarak of brother and sister.

The colour associated with Mangal is red, metal-copper, gem-red coral and element-fire. A fast on Tuesdays, Hanuman worship etc are means to pacify him.
