Introduction:

From the astrological point of view, Rahu is considered as a shadow planet and one that gives sufferings. Its site is situated near Uppali Village, at 7 km to the east of Kumbhkonam in Tamil Nadu. Uppali is also known as the Tirupati of South.

The main presiding deity here is Lord Shiv. It is believed that here, the king of serpents, Rahu had worshipped Shiv. Hence the form of Shiv is here is called Nageshwar.

The temple was built in the 10th century by Gandaraditya Chola, the son of Chola king Parantak-I.

The famous saint Tirugyan Sambandar visited this place and composed songs praising Nageshwar.

This place has been considered holy since ancient times. It is said that saints like Parashar, Agastya, and Vishwamitra also meditated here.

The Rahu Temple is located in the south-west corner of the Nagnath Swami Temple complex. The temple has idols of Rahu with both of his wives, Simhi and Chitralekha.

The Vedic astrology does not have a reference of Rahu. Its earliest evidence is found in the Mahabharat.

Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs:

Rahu has been stated as the son of King Viprachit and Simhika in Shrimadbhagwat Puran. Simhika is believed to be the sister of Bhakt Prahlad and daughter of Hiranyakaship. Rahu is said to have 100 brothers and a sister known as Mahishmati.

It is believed that here, Rahu had worshipped Shiv to get absolved from the curse of Saint Sushila. His penance not only relieved him of the curse but also granted him the status of a planet.

According to the Skand Puran, after the churning of the ocean, Rahu disguised himself as a God to get a share of nectar and drank some of it. However Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini, cut off his head on being signalled by Surya and Chandrama.

Rigved states that when Rahu, the son of Asuya (Simhika) swallows Surya and Chandra, the entire earth is engulfed in complete darkness.

It is believed that when Rahu is bathed with milk, the milk turns blue and regains its whiteness on reaching up to his feet.

According to another belief, King Sambumali also worshipped Nagnath Swami and bathed in the Surya Sarovar here. This rid him of the curse by sage Kalangiri.

Dravidian texts consider Rahu as a form of Lord Shiv and suggest that Rahu is pleased by the worship of Durga.

Astrological Beliefs

Astrological Beliefs:

According to Matsya Puran, Rahu revolves around the shadow of the earth and is the presiding deity of shadow.

Skand Puran states that a favourable position of Rahu provides an individual with strength and prosperity. Such persons are not affected by snake bites, and they are also befriended by their enemies.

Those affected by the negatives of Rahu get an abhishek done of themselves at the Rahu Temple in Nageshwaram during a Rahu kaal on Sunday.

Astrology considers Rahu as a kaarak griha that has an effect on materialistic pleasures. Its metal is lead and gem is hessonite.

Rahu is the Lord of 3 nakshatras, Adra, Swati, and Shatabhisha. Its element is air and direction is south-west.
