Introduction:

Amongst the Navgrahas, Shani (Saturn) is considered as the Lord of justice and punishment who accomplishes these tasks with cruelty. Hence he is considered as a cruel and agonising planet.

There are several Shani Temples in India of which the most prominent one is Shri Shani Shinganapur situated in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, at 35 km to the north of Ahmednagar.

Millions of people affected by Shani visit Shinganapur to pacify him and seek his blessings.

Shani’s discipline is strictly followed in Shinganapur. As a result, there is no chaos seen amongst the devotees at the temple.

A black stone is placed on a large platform in Shinganapur which is considered as a symbol of Shani. Traditionally, the devotees are not supposed to wear anything except orange cloth covering the lower body. The puja and abhishek are also performed with wet clothes on.

In Shinganapur, females are restricted from the puja and abhishek of Shani.

The stone symbol of Shani in Shinganapur is believed to be a self-emergent one which was found by a shepherd. He was instructed by Lord Shani to worship the stone idol and bathe it with oil.

It is also believed that Lord Shani himself ordered that no temple of his be built at this place.

Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs:

According to Bhavishya Puran, Shani is the child of Surya and his wife Chhaya, and was a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu and Krishna since childhood.

According to the Kashi Khand of Skand Puran, Lord Shani performed strict penance of Lord Shiv in Kashi (Banaras) which resulted in his powers increasing to 7 times that of Surya. This Puran provides a detailed reference about the creation of Shani.

Vedang Jyotish believes that the period when Shani enters the Rohini nakshatra is one that brings about misery for the entire world. According to this Puran, he has 7 carriers viz, an elephant, a horse, a deer, a donkey, a dog, a buffalo, and a vulture. He has a black complexion and wears yellow clothes.

According to epics like the Ramayan and Mahabharat, the sorrowful effect of Shani can be eliminated by the puja and worship of Hanuman. It is believed that it was Hanuman who freed Shani from Ravan’s captivity.

Dozens of tales about the effects of Shani can be found in various Puranas and religious texts. The sorrows of King Nal and the agony of King Harishchandra were all due to the effect of Shani.

According to folklore prevalent in Shinganapur, Shanidev in a leper’s disguise visited a Brahmin’s home who lived with his 3 daughters-in-law. Only the youngest daughter-in-law welcomed him and treated him with respect. This resulted in the fulfilment of all her desires while the other daughters-in-law had to go through a lot of suffering.

According to Brahmavaivart Puran, when Shani visited the Kailash Mountain with the other planets on the occasion of Ganesh’s birth, just a sight by Shani destroyed Ganesh’s head and as a result an elephant’s head had to be fitted instead.

According to local beliefs, Lord Shani himself assured the residents of Shinganapur that no theft or other crime would take place here. It is worth noting that even today the doors are neither shut nor locked in any of the houses in this village.

Astrological Beliefs

Astrological Beliefs:

From the astrological point of view, those individuals in whose birth chart Shani is in an unfavourable position have to face a lot of problems in life; however a favourable Shani provides all sorts of happiness and prosperity.

It takes 30 years for Shani to complete 1 revolution around the Sun. Therefore he spends 2 ½ years in each zodiac sign, however his effect stays on from the time of entering the previous zodiac to the exit from the next zodiac. In this manner, 7 ½ years (Sadhe saati) are extremely difficult for the particular zodiac. It is said that a prince can turn into a pauper during this period.

Shani is the Lord of Makar (Capricorn) and Kumbh (Aquarius) zodiac signs. Budh (Mercury) and Shukra (Venus) are considered as friendly planets and 3 nakshatras, Pushya, Anuradha, and Uttara are ruled by him.

Black or blue is the colour associated with Shani. His metal is iron, and gem is blue sapphire. His element is air, direction west, grain black sesame, and flower is violet. He is associated with all black animals and useless trees.

Several methods are suggested for the calming of Shani like, 19,000 chants of the Shani mantra ‘Om Shan Shanaishcharay Namah’, worship of Hanuman, worship of Shiv and Vishnu, etc.
