Introduction:

Shukra (Venus) is considered as the guru of demons, and a Brahmin from the Bhrigu dynasty. It is said that he received the Mritsanjivani Vidya from Lord Shiv. He is also considered as a master of Yoga.

Shukra planet is worshipped along with the Agneeshwar form of Lord Shiv in Kanjanur. Kanjanur has also been referred to as Brahmapuri and Agnisthal in the religious sources.

Kanjanur Village is 18 km to the north of Kumbhkonam which is situated to the north of the Kaveri River in Tamil Nadu. There is no separate idol of Shukra. He is believed to reside in the stomach of Lord Shiv.

Noted saint, Hardatt Shaivacharya has been associated with this place. Appar, one of the Shaivmurtis also visited this place.

The temple here is believed to be from the Chola period with some of the construction carried out during the Vijaynagar Empire. The main Gopuram (Rajgopuram) of the temple is 5-storeyed with 2 parakrams in the temple.

The Nataraj in the Nataraj Sabhamandap is in a Mukti-Taandav pose which is said to have been displayed by Lord Shiv to Parashar Muni.

Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs:

A reference in the Mahabharat states that Shukracharya performed strict penance of Lord Shiv and obtained Mritsanjivani Vidya with which he would instil life in the demons dying in a battle, resulting in the defeat of the Gods.

The defeated Gods went up to Lord Shiv and mentioned explained their problem. With no solution in sight, Lord Shiv swallowed Shukracharya. It is this form of Shiv and Shukracharya that is worshipped in Kanjanur. Later, with the efforts of Goddess Parvati, Shukracharya could achieve freedom.

The form of Shukracharya is that of a saint who holds a Dand (staff), a Mala (rosary), a Paatra (bowl), and a blessing posture respectively in his 4 hands. He is seated on a white lotus in his planetary form.

The Aadi Parv of Mahabharat suggests him as the Lord of medicines, mantras, and saps (juices). According to the Matsya Puran, Lord Shiv also appointed him as the in-charge of wealth.

It is believed that during his incarnation as Vaman, Lord Vishnu damaged an eye of Shukra when he was trying to pierce a hole in Vaman’s kamandal (water bowl).

This place has been referred to as Sarupedimangalam in an inscription of Vikram Chol (1131 A.D.). It is believed that here Parvati married Lord Shiv in one of her incarnations.

Astrological Beliefs

Astrological Beliefs:

Indian astrology considers Shukra as a feminine planet who rules the south-east direction and whose element is Kaf (water).

He is the Lord of Vrish (Taurus) and Tula (Libra) and executes a high in Meen (Pisces) and a low in Kanya (Virgo). In a favourable state, Shukra grants beauty, happiness, prosperity, love, pretty costumes, and jewellery.

An unfavourable Shukra is responsible for stomach ailments, throat diseases, sexual disorders, separation with wife, possession by spirits etc. Worshipping Goddess Parvati in Kanjanur on Friday is said to eliminate all these negative effects.

The associations with Shukra are: colour-white, gem-diamond, metal-silver, white clothes, curd, sugar, white horse etc. Cow worship also calms Shukra planet.

Agneeshwar and his wife Ishwari are believed to be the presiding deity of Shukra in Kanjanur.

According to local beliefs, 16,000 recitations of the mantra, ‘Om Shum Shukray Namah’ in the Agneeshwar Temple converts the negative effects of Shukra into positive ones.
