According to the belief from the Puranas, Lord Shiva (Tripurantak) rested in this region after slaying Triprasur, and his sweat droplets created the Bhima River. In this battle, Shiva appeared in a magnificent (Bhim) form. Hence, it came to be known as Bhimashankar Jyotirling.

According to a local legend, a woodcutter found a Jyotirling in the 14th century and he built a small Shiv temple here.

According to another belief from Tretayug, on getting a boon from Brahma, Kumbhkaran’s son Bhim (Karkati-Mata) began tormenting the Gods. But when he tried to kill King Kamrupeshwar, a great Shiv devotee, Lord Shiv himself appeared and killed him.

In the battle against Tripurasur, Shiv was supported by Parvati, and Brahma had therefore worshipped her with lotus (Kamal) flowers. As a result, she was instated as Kamalaja.

One can rid of all types of sins and attain moksh by worshipping the Bhimashankar Jyotirling and taking a dip in the holy pond.
