Mallikarjun, the second Jyotirling of Shiv, is situated on the Shri Shail Mountain in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh.
    
Shri Shail is the northern part of the Nallamalai range, the southern part being called as Kailash. It is also known as Shri Parvat or Shrigiri.
    
Currently this region is protected under the Project Tiger.
    
This holy place is one where entry and worship is open for all, irrespective of religion, caste, creed, faith, or gender.
    
This is a sacred site for those belonging to the Lingayat faith. It is believed that Shripati, one of the Panchacharyas, appeared from this Jyotirling.
   
For the Shakt followers, it is an important Shakti Peeth and the site of Bhramarambha Devi who is considered as one among the 18 Mahashaktis of Durga.
The entire area is inhabited by the Chenchu tribes who, even today, continue to live with their primitive culture, primitive tradition, and primitive beliefs.

Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs: 
   
According to regional beliefs, Shri, the daughter of a sage, worshipped and pleased Shiv on this mountain. It has been named Shri Parvat after her.
    
 Regarding the Jyotirling, Shiv Puran says that Shiv and Parvati came here to pacify their upset son Kartikeya, and installed themselves as a Jyotirling.
    
According to the temple inscriptions, this divine Jyotirling was found by Chandravati, the daughter of a local king, who built the grand temple here.
   
It has been referred to as the site of Devi Madhavi in the Puran.
    
The Van Parv of Mahabharat states that an individual who worships Mallikarjun Jyotirling does not have to take a rebirth.
    
The Shiv Puran states that worship and puja performed here fulfils all the desires of an individual.
   
According to some Puranas, Goddess Durga took the form of a Bhramar (bee) and killed a demon called Arunasur, lending her the name of Bhramarambha Devi.
   
Various religious scriptures refer to the place as a Shiv site where Hiranyakashyap (Prahlad’s father), Lord Ram, and the Pandavas also worshipped Shiv.
 

Historical Facts

History: 
   
The history of Shri Shailam is very ancient and finds a mention in the Shiv Puran, Ling Puran, Skand Puran as well as the Ramayan and the Mahabharat.
   
The first historical reference of the place is found in the Nasik inscription of the Satvahan king, Pulmavi.
   
After the Satvahans, the Ikshvakus of Nagarjunkonda gained control over the region.
   
Harshvardhan’s composition mentions about Shri Kanthdas-a siddh, as the guru of Udayan.
   
Shankaracharya visited the place in the ninth century and referred to it as the second Jyotirling in his Lingastrotam.
   
The actual development of the temple took place during the reign of the Kakatiya dynasty of Warangal when Princess Myala built the main temple in 1230 A.D. and Prataprudra Dev donated a number of villages to meet the temple expenses.
   
The Reddys (Prolacha Amma Reddy) built 853 steps from the temple up to Patalganga in the 14th century.
   
Harihar-II of the Vijaynagar Empire built the main mandap in 1405 A.D. while Krishnadevrai built the eastern gopuram.
   
After his escape from Aurangzeb’s captivity, when Shivaji came here in 1667 A.D. as a part of his pilgrimage itinerary, he built the northern gopuram.

Mallikarjun Temple:
 
Rested on 2 huge stone walls, this temple is adorned with images of animals. The renowned, 8-inch tall Shiv Jyotirling is housed in this temple.
    
Bhramarambha Temple:
 
Situated near the main temple, this is a Shakti Peeth with the 8-faced idol of Devi. The kumkum puja performed by married women has a great spiritual significance.
    
Sakshi Ganpati Temple:
 
This temple is situated at about 2 km from the market place. The Ganesh here is considered as the sakshi (witness) of an individual’s visit to the pilgrimage; hence he is the first to be worshipped.
    
Shikhareshwar Temple:
 
This is a Shiv Temple situated on the highest peak of the region.
   
Patalganga:
  The deep gorge of the Krishna River is famous as Patalganga which can be reached by steps from the main temple.

The Chenchu priests also play an important role in the temple management along with the Brahmins and the Lingayats. Here, festivals of the great tradition as well as small tradition are celebrated; a few of them are as follows:

Sankranti  :  Magh month (January)
Kartik Mahotsav  :  Kartik month (November)
   
 
The most important festival however is Mahashivratri.

Important Informations
Shri Parvat is situated to the right of the Krishna River at 232 km from Hyderabad. Here, the Krishna River creates a deep gorge.
Tourists visit Shri Shail all year round but the ideal time for a visit is between October and March.
