Introduction:

Dwarika is situated along the coast of the Arabian Sea on the western border of India, in the Jamnagar district of Gujarat.

It is not only one of the 4 dhams but is considered as one among the 7 moksh-daayi cities.

The compositions of the Vaishnav Alwar saints consider it as one among the 108 Divya-deshams.

Nageshwar Jyotirling which is one of the 12 Jyotirlings of Shiv is situated here. Shankaracharya had established his Western Math (Kalika Peeth) here.

It has been an important commercial centre and a harbour since ancient times due to its coastal location.

Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs:

Dwarika literally means ‘Door of Brahma’

According to the Skand Puran, Brahma’s Manas Putras (sons born of the mind), Sanak, Sanandan and Sanat Kumar, worshipped Lord Vishnu and pleased him; as a result even Ganga descended as Gomti.

According to the Mahabharat and the Harivansh Puran, Dwarika was settled by Lord Krishna with the help of Vishwakarma.

The Lord is said to be present here replete with 16 art forms according to the Hindu beliefs.

Vajranabh, the grandson of Krishna is responsible for building the Jagat Temple over here.

According to the mythological beliefs, the Lord administers and governs the entire creation from here and hence the Lord’s idol is in royal attire.

Lord Shiv tells his son, Skand, in the Skand Puran that every step placed by a devotee in Dwarika is equivalent to performing one Ashwamedh Yagna.

Historical Facts

History:

According to the Puranas, this city was established by Raiwat, a descendent of Vaivaswat Manu, which is why it is also known as Raivatpuri.

This place was very prosperous in the early years of the Christian era and was considered as the western entrance to India. This feature also gave it the name of Dwarvati.

The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea refers to it as Baraca harbour, while Ptolemy’s Geography mentions about it as Barake harbour.

The oldest evidence in the form of an inscription is the Palitana copper plate of Sinhaditya from 574 A.D.

Aadi Guru Shankaracharya established his Kalika Peeth (Western Math) over here in the early years of the ninth century.

The idol of Dwarikadheesh was taken from the main temple to Dakor in the 13th century and a new idol was installed here.

After the Mughals, the region came under the control of the Marathas. Sayajirao Gaikwad also built a port here.

After 1817, the entire Gujarat came under the British control.

The temple houses 5-feet tall and 4-armed statue of Dwarikadheesh made of black stone. Devotees believe that the feet of the idol are as soft as those of a normal, living human.

Rukmini Devi Temple:

This temple built in the Chalukya period is about 1.5 km from the city. Beautiful paintings of Rukmini and Krishna can be seen in the temple.
