The famous Lingraj Temple is situated in Bhuvaneshwar, the capital Orissa, a state in Eastern India. The presiding deity of the temple is Tribhuvaneshwar (Shiv).
   
There are over 500 old and new temples in the city, which is why it is known as the city of temples.
   
It is also the centre of Orissa’s holy golden triangle comprising of Konark, Puri, and Bhuvaneshwar.
   
Apart from Hindus, this region also has centres of faith of Jain and Buddhist pilgrims.
   
The Tribal Research Institute and Museum is also situated in Bhuvaneshwar which gives tourists an insight into the tribal life and culture.
   
Famous for its white tigers and white crocodiles, the Nandankanan Sanctuary is just 20 km from here.

Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs: 
   
It has been referred to as Ekamra region in the Puranas. The credit to the emergence of this place is given to Shiva, hence it is also known as Shambhav region.
   
According to Skand Puran, Lord Vishnu himself installed Lord Shiv here, and Shiv in turn made this place the giver of salvation.
   
The Markandeya Puran believes that Bhuvaneshari Devi, the presideing deity of Lord Tribhuvaneshwar, is a form of Parvati.
   
According to the local Purohits, this region is Hariharatmak, hence Lord Shiv is worshipped with the Harihar mantra, and his chief weapon is considered to be a bow.
   
According to popular beliefs, the Bindu Sagar Lake contains water from all the pilgrimages and it has the powers to destroy all the disorders of humans.
 

Historical Facts

History: 
   
In ancient times, it was the capital of the Kaling Empire.
   
Here, the Mauryan Emporor Ashok fought the renowned Kaling war in 261 B.C. which resulted in his conversion into a staunch Buddhist. Currently, there stands a Vishwa Shanti Stupa over here.
   
In 100 B.C., the region was ruled by Kharvel who conquered over Magadh. Inscriptions of Kharvel have been found in the Hathi Gupha (Elephant Cave).
   
The Parshurameshwar Temple was built during the times of Harshvardhan. It is the oldest temple here.
   
In the fourth century B.C., the ruler of Magadh, Mahapadmanand took the idol of Jin with him after the conquest of Kaling.
   
King Laltendu Kesari of the Som dynasty built the Lingraj Temple in the 7th century which was completed in 11th century.
   
In the middle ages, the region was called Jajnagar and was frequently attacked by the Muslim invaders.

Lingraj Temple:
 
This is the main temple here, situated in an enclosure of 150 square metres. It has 4 parts - The main temple, the Yagnashala, the Bhog Mandap, and the Natya Shala. Entry to non-Hindus is prohibited in this temple built in the Nagar architectural style.
   
Parshurameshwar Temple:
 
Dedicated to Shiv, this is the oldest temple. Besides Vishnu and Surya, it has the idols of Yama and 7 Matrukas (mother goddesses).
   
Mukteshwar Temple:
 
This temple from the 10th century is called the Gem of Orissa architecture.
   
Vitthal Temple:
 
With a display of sexual acts, this is the main temple of the tantrik faith. The presiding deity is Chamunda Devi.
   
Bindusagar Lake:
 
Situated to the north of the Lingraj Temple, this sacred lake is surrounded on all 4 sides by about 100 temples. A bath in this lake is believed to give salvation and relieves all ailments.
   
Museum:
 
This is the state museum situated on Lewis Road and displays articles belonging to Oriya culture as well as Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist religions.
   
Dhauli:
 
It is situated on the banks of the Daya River. Stone pillars of Ashok have been found here which give an idea of his religious beliefs.
   
Khandgiri and Udaigiri:
 
Within these hills are found the Hathi Gupha and the Rani Gupha that mention about the victories of Kharvel.

Ashokashtami:
 
This is a main festival of Lingraj Temple. A 4-day Rath-yatra (chariot procession) is organised from the Ashtami of Chaitra month. During the festival, the idol of Lingraj is bathed in Bindusagar Lake and then taken to the Rameshwar Temple.
   
Mahashivratri:
 
It is the biggest festival for devotees of Shiva. On this occasion, the chief Purohit of the temple lights lamps on the temple.
   
Tribal Fair:
 
Towards the end of January, this fair displays different aspects of the social and cultural life of 62 tribes like Gond, Santhal, Juang, Kol etc.
   
Pushpotsav:
 
This is celebrated towards the end of December and the beginning of January. The main centre of the festival is Ekamra Kanan where one can see a variety of displays, ranging from the rose to different types of cacti.
   
Dashera:
 
This is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the Vitthal Temple.
