Ranvireshwar is considered as the biggest Shiv Temple of Northern India. The temple has been named after the Dogra king, Maharaja Ranvir Singh, who built it.
    
The temple is situated in Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir.
    
Jammu is known as the city of temples where a large number of temples and Sikh gurudwaras can be seen.
    
The Ranvireshwar Temple houses an 8-feet tall, huge, black-stone Shivling which is surrounded by 12 crystal Shivlings of various sizes, symbolic of the 12 Jyotirlings of Shiv.
   
The passage of the temple has 1.25 lakh small Shivlings which have been brought from the holy Narmada River.
   
Every pilgrim visiting Jammu Kashmir comes here also besides going to the Raghunath Temple. Jammu is the base centre for visitors to Vaishnodevi and Kashmir, and they cannot resist the temptation of performing a puja in the Ranvireshwar Temple.

Though Ranvireshwar Temple was built in the last few years of the 19th century, Jammu has been a spiritual centre since ancient times.
    
 According to the Mahabharat, Arjun had worshipped Jambu Devi in this region and attained powers.
    
According to local folklore, the founder of this city, King Jambu Lochan, while hunting in the region, saw a goat and a lion on the banks of the Tawi River, drinking water together. Impressed with the sight, he decided to establish a city over here.
   
According to some local residents, Maharaja Ranvir Singh was inspired to build the Shiv temple in his dream.

History: 
   
Jammu and its neighbouring areas have been inhabited by humans since prehistoric days. Archaeological remains from the Neolithic Age have been found in the neighbouring Burzahom, and those from Harappa period in Akhnoor.
   
It is believed that in the 14th century B.C., a Rajput king called Jambu Lochan founded a city a by the name of Jambu Nagar. Which is today known as Jammu.
   
In the ancient times, the region was under the Mauryas, Kushans, and Guptas, however later the Hephthalites dominated the area.
   
The Shahi dynasty reigned the area from 670-1000 A.D. which was ended by Mahmood Ghaznavi.
   
In the middle ages, the control moved to the Sultans of Delhi and the Mughals.
   
In 1730 A.D., the Dogra Rajputs established modern Jammu but was later taken over by the Sikh Empire.
   
In 1835 A.D., Maharaja Ranjit Singh gave this region to his associate, Maharaja Gulab Singh. In 1846 A.D., as a part of the Amritsar treaty, the British gave away the entire region of Jammu-Kashmir to Gulab Singh on a payment of Rs. 75 lakh.
   
In 1883 A.D., Maharaja Ranvir Singh, the son of Gulab Singh, built this renowned Ranvireshwar Temple.

Ranvireshwar Temple:
 
This temple was built in 1883 A.D. The temple has 2 pavilions which are decorated with a variety of pictures and boast of India’s largest collection of Shivlings.
    
Raghunath Temple:
 
It is considered as northern India’s largest temple complex. The main temple is devoted to Lord Ram who is also known as Raghunath. Three sides of the temple have been covered with gold sheets. This temple has a large collection of Shaligram stones, symbolic of Lord Vishnu. The temple was built by Maharaja Gulab Singh who was also the founder of the Jammu Kashmir state.
    
Bawewali Mata ka Mandir:
 
This is a Kali Temple, situated in Bahu Fort which is on the banks of the Tawi River. This Devi is considered as the presiding deity of Jammu. The temple was built in 1822 A.D. on the occasion of the coronation of Maharaja Gulab Singh. A special puja is organised on Tuesdays and Sundays.
   
Peer Khoh Cave:
 
It is believed that in this cave situated on the banks of the Tawi River, Riksharaj Jambavant, an associate of Lord Ram, had performed austerities.
   
Bagh-e-Bahu:
 
Built in the Mughal style and situated on the banks of the Tawi, this lovely garden is difficult to be ignored by tourists.
   
Vaishnodevi:
 
Although this holy shrine is 60 km from here and the city has hundreds of other temples and tourist locations besides the above, almost all the tourists visiting Jammu make it a point to visit Vaishnodevi also

Mahashivratri Fair:
 
This fair is held twice in a year in the months of Magh (January-February) and Ashwin (September-October) in the Bawewali Mata Temple in Bahu Fort.
    
Lohri:
 
This is a colourful festival celebrated on the occasion of Makar Sankranti on 13th January. On this day, Chhajja dance is organised with havans being performed at homes and in temples. It is celebrated as a bathing festival.
   
Vaishakhi:
 
It is celebrated as a new year of the Vikram Samvat (calendar) on 14th of April. It is a harvest festival and a large number of marriages take place on this day. It is particularly popular among Sikhs as the day when Guru Govindsinghji founded the Khalsa Panth in 1699 A.D.

Jammu is situated in the northern part of India, on both the sides of the Tawi River.
Generally the temperature here is pleasant and tourists visit throughout the year, however a variation is found in the temperature which shoots up to 45o Centigrade in summer and could go down to as low as 0 o Centigrade in the winter.
