Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs:

According to Ganesh Puran, this Ganpati has been named after Ballal, a firm Ganesh devotee and the son of Kalyan Seth and his wife Induvati of Pali Village.

Kalyan Seth and the villagers were worried about Ballal’s single minded Ganesh devotion and its spread among other children from his childhood days. As a result, once when Ballal was engaged in the worship of Ganesh in the forest, Kalyan Seth not only threw away the Ganesh idol but also beat up Ballal and tied him to a tree.

At Ballal’s call, Ganpati appeared as a Brahmin and blessed him with a boon that he would permanently reside at this place and that this form of his would be known as Ballaleshwar Ganpati.

According to the Mudgal Puran, Vibhand Rishi also worshipped Ganesh at this place was given a darshan by Ganesh.

This place is also related to the tale of Ramayan. The region was a part of Dandkaranya, and the place where Lord Ram got Devi-darshan is 8 km from here and is considered to fulfil desires. The place where the Jatayu and Ravan fought is also believed to be a few kilometres from here.

Historical Facts

Peshwa Bajirao’s (1720-40) brother, Chimaji Appa, offered to the temple, a huge bell that he seized from the Portuguese after conquering the Vasai Fort. This bell currently hangs at the entrance of the temple.

In 1770 A.D., Moroba Dada Phadnavis, father of Nana Phadnavis, built a new temple in place of the old one.

In 1910 A.D., renowned Ganesh devotee, Krihnaji Ringe, built the Ashtastambhi Sabhamandap (8-pillar hall) at an expense of Rs. 18,000. The pillars are made of Chir wood.
