Introduction:

The word Theur comes from Tharb which means restless. It is believed that the restless mind of Lord Brahma came to peace at this place.

This is the site of the Chintamani form of Ganesh who is believed to fulfill all the desires of his devotees.

Theur is situated in the Haveli Taluka of Pune district in Maharashtra, at a distance of 25 km from Pune. The region is famous for its sugarcane farming.

Shri Chintamani was also the family deity of Peshwa Madhavrao, the last of the great Maratha Peshwas, who also died in Theur.

Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs:

According to local beliefs, King Ganasur seized a gem called Chintamani from Kapilmuni by force. This gem had amazing powers which could provide anything that one desired.

In order to get his gem back, Kapilmuni worshipped Lord Ganesh. This pleased him and therefore he killed Ganasur and got the Chintamani back. Kapilmuni however returned it to Ganesh as an offering which is why he came to be known as Chintamani Ganesh. The battle of Ganesh and Ganasur is believed to have taken place here.

According to another belief, Gautam Rishi’s curse produced hundreds of holes in Lord Indra’s body. To get absolved from the curse, Indra worshipped Ganesh under a Kadamb tree.

Pleased with Indra’s penance, Ganesh converted the holes on his body into eyes which is why Indra came to be known as Sahastraksh (hundred eyed).

In the religious texts, Theur is referred to as Kadamb Nagar where the restless Brahma got peace with the blessings of Ganesh.

According to popular beliefs, Moriya Goswami also meditated here and Ganesh appeared before him in the form of a lion.

Historical Facts

History:

This region has been a principal centre of the Ganpatya sect since ancient times; however the present temple was built by Dharnidhar Maharaj, a descendent of Moriya Goswami.

Dharnidhar Maharaj is considered as a contemporary of Chhatrapti Shivaji.

In the early years of the 18th century, when Chimaji Appa seized the Vasai Fort from the Portuguese, he offered a huge bell to the Chintamani Temple.

The actual development of Chintamani Temple and Theur took place during the reign of Madhavrao-I (1761-72). A good part of his life was spent here. He was the one who built the Sabhamandap (hall) and the roads, and also renovated the temple.

Pehwa Madhavrao died in Theur on 18th November 1772. His wife, Ramabai performed Sati on his pyre.
