Introduction:

Moreshwar is situated in the Baramati Taluka of Pune district of Maharashtra. According to traditions in holy scriptures, those on a pilgrimage of Ashtavinayak must visit this place first.

The Moreshwar region is shaped like a peacock. It is said that at one time a large number of peacocks were found here, thus lending the name Moreshwar to the region.

This pilgrimage is also compared with Lord Ganesh’s abode Swanandlok and therefore it is also called Bhuswanand Bhuvan.

The famous Ganesh devotee from Maharashtra, Shri Yogindracharyaji’s birth, death and meditation were all associated with this place. His math is situated in the temple complex.

This is primarily an agricultural region with crops like sugarcane, grapes, cotton, and wheat grown here.

Mythological Beliefs

Mythological Beliefs:

According to a popular legend, the Gods were being tormented by Sindhurasur, son of King Chakrapani of Gandaki Empire of Mithila region. At their request, Parvati worshipped Gajanan for 12 years and as a result, Gajanan took birth as Parvati’s son.

The initial 15 years of Lord Ganesh’s life were spent in this region where he killed a demon called Kamalasur.

It is also believed that Ganesh killed all the demons while being seated on a peacock, hence he came to be known as Moreshwar (Mor is peacock in Marathi and Hindi).

According to another tale, Mayurji was born as the son of Vinita, the wife of sage Kashyap. Lord Ganesh made him his carrier which is why he came to be known as Mayuresh.

A shlok inscribed at the entrance of the Moreshwar Temple suggests that this temple was built by Lord Brahma himself.

According to another belief, Lord Ganesh had assured the Gods that he would take birth as Mayureshwar in the Tretayug.

In the temple complex there are Shami and Tarati trees believed to be Kalpavriksha. All sorts of desires are said to be fulfilled by meditating under these trees.

It is said that Lord Mahadev himself also attains Brahmanand (divine joy) from Mayureshwar.

Historical Facts

History:

According to the early sources, the Mayureshwar Temple was built by a Hindu officer, Shri Kode who worked in Bidar.

In the 16th century, Yogindracharyaji was born who wrote a commentary on Mudgal Puran which had mentions of Ganpati Mahatmya and Yogswaroop. It is believed that he lived for 228 years.

According to descriptions by James Grant Duff, the entire region was gifted by the Nizam of Ahmednagar to Chhatrapati Shivaji’s grandfather, Maloji Raje Bhosle in 1603 A.D. for his military services.

Shivaji’s spiritual guru, Samarth Ramdas also visited the region in the middle of the 17th century and composed an aarti in honour of Mayureshwar which is sung in all the homes in Maharashtra.

The famous Ganpati-devotee Moriya Goswami was also born in Morgaon. He built a Ganesh Temple in Chinchwad.

In 1745 A.D., Sahu Maharaj handed over the administration of this region to Babuji Nayak, a noted Ganesh devotee, and a pious individual.
